Stripe Atlas review: what international founders get for the fee
By Greatweek · Published
This Stripe Atlas review is for international founders deciding whether to use it to form a US company. In short: Atlas is a focused Delaware formation service with strong links to Stripe payments and venture-style documents. It fits founders who want a Delaware C corporation and expect to raise. It does less for founders who want another state or ongoing tax and bookkeeping in one package. All prices and terms below were read on Stripe's pages in October 2026. Greatweek has no affiliate relationship with Stripe.
What Stripe Atlas costs
Stripe Atlas lists a one-time setup fee of $500, which it says includes government fees and the first year of registered agent service (as of October 2026). After the first year, registered agent service renews at $100 per year, and you can cancel at any time.

Stripe also states that the $500 fee is refunded if the company deposits $5,000 into a Stripe Treasury account within 90 days. Read the current terms before you rely on that.
The fee does not cover Delaware's annual taxes. A Delaware corporation pays franchise tax and a $50 annual report fee by March 1. A Delaware LLC pays a $400 annual tax by June 1. Stripe's own tax page still mentions a $300 LLC tax, but Delaware's official page says $400 (as of October 2026), so budget for $400. The two franchise tax calculation methods can produce very different bills, so check which one applies before you pay.
What is included
According to Stripe's Atlas documentation, the package includes:
- Delaware incorporation
- The EIN application
- Founder equity issuance
- Automatic 83(b) filing for C corporation founders
- Legal documents prepared with the law firm Cooley
- Y Combinator's post-money SAFE templates
Atlas also lists $2,500 in Stripe credits for the first year and "over $50,000" in partner discounts. The value of those depends on whether you would use the partners anyway.
Atlas offers three company types: a Delaware C corporation, a Delaware LLC, or a C corporation subsidiary of an existing company. The subsidiary option asks for the parent company's legal name, country and tax ID, and issues the shares to the parent after incorporation. That option is relevant for established companies opening a US arm.
Timelines for founders without an SSN
Stripe says Delaware incorporation usually takes 1 to 2 business days. The EIN is where international founders wait. Stripe states that if the founder has a US SSN, US address and US phone, the EIN takes 1 to 2 business days after incorporation.
If the founder does not have an SSN, Atlas will get the EIN in 10 to 35 business days after incorporation. Build that wait into your banking, payments and first-invoice plans.
The application asks for an SSN or ITIN where you have one, and requires a US phone number for the EIN application. Stripe notes that virtual numbers are available through partners. The IRS process itself is explained in our guide to getting an EIN without an SSN.
Atlas companies can start accepting US card payments on Stripe and open a Stripe Treasury account before the EIN arrives. Payouts before the EIN are capped at $100,000, and other payment methods become available after the EIN is issued. Stripe also states that it is not a bank, and that checking accounts are provided by Fifth Third Bank, N.A.
The 83(b) question for non-US founders
Atlas files an 83(b) election for all C corporation founders. Stripe's guidance for non-US founders says those who will never be US taxpayers do not need one, while those who file or may file US returns should consider it. Without an SSN or ITIN, Atlas reports a founder to the IRS as a non-US taxpayer for 83(b) purposes. Whether the election matters to you is a tax question for an advisor in your country and in the US.
Who Stripe Atlas fits
Atlas suits international founders who want a Delaware C corporation, expect to raise from US investors, and plan to take payments through Stripe. It also suits established companies that want a simple C corporation subsidiary with standard documents. Stripe states that startups in over 175 countries have chosen Atlas, and its documentation includes guides for Indian-resident and Singapore founders.
Who it may not fit
Atlas forms companies only in Delaware. If you want Wyoming or the state where your team works, look elsewhere. Atlas does not sell compliance or tax filing itself. It refers founders to discounted tax and accounting partners, so you will need a separate provider for Form 1120, any Form 5472, and Delaware filings.
Founders who want a Delaware LLC should read Stripe's own caution that with a non-US founder "tax filings can become complex." Atlas also states that it is not a law firm and does not give legal, tax or accounting advice. A complex group structure, existing investors or an intellectual property transfer may need a law firm alongside or instead of a formation service.
What to check before signing up
Formation is fast. The slower question is whether the US opportunity is real at your stage or a year too early. Greatweek's US market entry work answers that on the commercial side, including which buyers to target first and which route to market fits your economics, and the free US Market Entry Playbook sets out the sequence. Then check four things:
- That a Delaware C corporation or subsidiary is the right entity for your plans.
- How long you can wait for the EIN if you have no SSN.
- Who will handle your annual tax filings and Delaware franchise tax.
- Whether the $100 renewal and partner offers suit you.
